Dr. Alwin Chan

After calling to the bar in 2005, Alwin has developed a civil practice with emphasis to land and building management disputes. He joined The University of Hong Kong in 2015 and has since taught LLB, JD and PCLL courses in civil litigation, personal injuries, advocacy, land law and conveyancing aspects.
In respect of service to the legal profession, Alwin has been an examiner in the PCEA Conversion Exam for Hong Kong Land Law since 2022, and is currently serving on the High Rights of Assessment Board. He co-authored the new volume (Vol. 18(1)) on Conveyancing in the Halsbury Laws of Hong Kong, and is an annotator for the Annotated Ordinance of Hong Kong: Conveyancing and Property Ordinance (Cap 219). Alwin was also a consultant to the Task Force for the Study on Tenancy Control of Subdivided Units in 2020-21, and the recommendations were largely adopted in the Landlord and Tenant (Consolidation) Amendment Bill 2021, which is now Part IVA of the LTCO.
In respect of research, Alwin is a co-author to 'Private Takings of Land for Urban Redevelopment: A Tale of Two Cities' (2021) 69 (2) The American Journal of Comparative Law 295. He is a Co-Principal Investigator for Collaborative Research Fund for 2021/22 on HK Insolvency Restructuring Law and Policy in Times of COVID-19 and Beyond, of which his focus is on the behaviour (and its implications) of landlord and tenant under the pandemic. Recently, he has successfully completed his PhD thesis on property rights and urban renewal 'takings' in Hong Kong. Lastly, Alwin also serves the Convenor for Real Estate Law and Finance at the Asian Institute of International Financial Law.
